My kids were in the shopping cart at Albertson’s having a blast today. They had never seen a cart so cool, with room for two of them to pretend they were driving a hot pink flowered car through the store. My 5 year old and 1 year old were squealing and making car noises while my 3 year old pouted next to me, waiting for his turn. Meanwhile, we passed a nice lady shopping who said one word to me.
Wow. That stung. I tried to remind myself that she probably didn’t mean it the way it sounded, right? Right?!? Maybe she was making a joke. I’ll give her the benefit of the doubt.
There are lots of not-so-nice things people say to moms with children, especially when your kids are close in age.
When my third baby was born, my older children were 18 months and 3 1/2 years old. Announcing the pregnancy was a shock to everyone. We heard a lot of “you’re crazy!” and “what were you thinking?” types of comments. And those were just from the people who loved us enough to tell us what they were thinking!! We had a good laugh at all of those statements, especially since we were just as surprised as the rest of the world.
I also heard a few comments like “Well if anyone can handle it, you can.” Wow. What a kind thing to say to a pregnant mama! I heard lots of excitement from many family members too and friends too.
Since I love to focus on the positives instead of the negatives, I wrote a guest post at Beauty in the Mess to encourage moms like me, who have little stairstep kiddos. We all know it’s hard, but it’s time someone shared the actual benefits of having children so close in age. Because there really are some! Go here to see my guest post, The Benefits of Having Children Close in Age at Beauty in the Mess.
